Scholarship Awards
The purpose of the Sacramento Rainbow Chamber Foundation Scholarship Awards program is to motivate and assist Greater Sacramento’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) and other supportive students in pursuing and completing an educational degree or vocational certificate.
Eligibility
Applicants must reside in or plan to attend a university, college, or school in one of the following counties: Amador, Calaveras, Colusa, El Dorado, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Sierra, Solano, Stanislaus, Sutter, Tuolumne, Yolo, and Yuba.
The student must be enrolled in the 12th grade of high school or in a university or college, or a qualified vocational school, or intend to be so enrolled in September 2009.
The student must submit a fully completed scholarship application. Applications that are not fully completed will be disqualified. The student must have a minimum 2.9 cumulative grade point average.
Application Deadline
The completed application must be postmarked (if mailed) or transmitted electronically to the Rainbow Chamber Foundation no later than September 1, 2009.
Awards and Conditions
Scholarship winners will be notified in writing by September 15, 2009.
At least $4,000 of scholarships will be awarded, of no less than $1,000 each. One-half of the award will be paid upon verification of enrollment at the institution listed on the application and the student’s grade point average. The remaining half will be paid at the end of the first term of instruction upon verification of the student’s grade point average.
Scholarship recipients are strongly encouraged to attend, as the guests of the Foundation, the Rainbow Chamber Foundation Annual Dinner to be held on September 22, 2009, in order to be formally introduced, presented with their scholarship awards, and to make brief remarks if desired.
Scholarship recipients agree that the Foundation may post their photographs, names, goals and objectives on the Foundation’s website.
An applicant may, without any adverse impact on the consideration of his/her application, indicate in writing on the application that any award remain confidential. In such event, attendance at the dinner will not be required, the recipient will not be identified by name at the dinner, and the Foundation will not place that recipient’s information on the Foundation website. However, the Foundation cannot further guarantee confidentiality.
Selection
Scholarship award decisions are made by the Scholarship Committee of the Rainbow Chamber Foundation. Finalists will be selected based on the following criteria:
- Academic achievement based on grade point average
- Life experiences
- History of involvement with the GLBT community or in related issues and activities
- Quality of written expression
Instructions
To apply for the Rainbow Chamber Foundation scholarship, you must do the following:
- Fill out the attached application completely.
- Obtain a letter of recommendation or email from a teacher, counselor or non-academic mentor.
- Write a 500-600 word essay. Suggested topics include:
- Future Goals
- How you have made a difference in GLBT Community.
- What changes you would you like to see in the GLBT community? How might these changes be accomplished?
- Complete the extracurricular and community activities section of the scholarship application form.
